Free Cancer Treatment By Ahsania Mission and Grameenphone, Bangladesh

Based on estimates of the Bangladesh Cancer Society there are about 1,000,000 cancer patients in Bangladesh. Each year about 200,000 new cancer patients are added and 150,000 die from the disease. Despite the numbers, existing cancer treatment facilities in Bangladesh are extremely limited and only 15,000 patients receive the proper medical treatment each year.

Dhaka Ahsania Mission established the Ahsania Mission Cancer and General Hospital, which is a specialized institution to create awareness about Cancer. The hospital provides high quality diagnostic and therapeutic care to ease the suffering of patients with cancer on a NO-PROFIT-NO-LOSS basis. The Mission is working to develop the hospital into a centre of excellence in the country in the field of cancer control (education, awareness creation, diagnosis, treatment and research on cancer).

The sole telecom partner, Grameenphone will also work with the Dhaka Ahsania Mission authorities to screen the patients who are to admitted to those wards to ensure proper utilization. One third of the wards sponsored by GP will be reserved for more economically disadvantaged patients who will receive free admission and full treatment; the rest of the disadvantaged patients screened will receive treatment, which will be subsidized by Grameenphone.

চোখের ছানি কেটে লেন্স বসানো হয় ৫০০ টাকায়: গণস্বাস্থ্য নগর হাসপাতালে দরিদ্রদের স্বল্পমূল্যে চিকিৎসা

ধানমন্ডির গণস্বাস্থ্য নগর হাসপাতাল নিম্নবিত্ত মানুষের জন্য স্বল্পমূল্যে চিকিৎসাসেবার বিশেষ সুযোগ সৃষ্টি করেছে। এখানে একজন রোগীর চোখের ছানি কেটে লেন্স বসানো হয় মাত্র ৫০০ টাকায়। স্বাস্থ্যবিমার আওতায় হাসপাতালটি এই সেবা দিচ্ছে।
পটুয়াখালীর পানপট্টি গ্রামের মোতাহার প্যাদার সঙ্গে কথা হয় গণস্বাস্থ্য নগর হাসপাতালে। তাঁর চোখে অস্ত্রোপচার হয়েছে ৬ ডিসেম্বর। তাঁর চোখে একটি কৃত্রিম লেন্স লাগানো হয়েছে। তাতে মোতাহার প্যাদা বেজায় খুশি।
চোখের সমস্যা ছিল তাঁর দীর্ঘদিনের। কিন্তু খরচের আশঙ্কায় তিনি চিকিৎসকের কাছে যাননি। গণস্বাস্থ্য নগর হাসপাতাল বড় খরচের হাত থেকে বাঁচিয়েছে তাঁকে। চোখের চিকিৎসায় সাকল্যে তাঁর খরচ হয়েছে দুই হাজার টাকা।
হাসপাতাল কর্তৃপক্ষ জানায়, এই দুই হাজার টাকার মধ্যে মোতাহারের ছয়টি পরীক্ষার ব্যয় আছে। পরীক্ষাগুলো হচ্ছে: ইসিজি, বায়োমেট্রি, রক্ত (সম্পূর্ণ পরীক্ষা), ডায়াবেটিস, এইচবিএস/এজি ও সিএস। কৃত্রিম লেন্সের দাম ও হাসপাতালের তিন দিনের শয্যা ভাড়াও ওই খরচের মধ্যেই। এর বাইরে শুধু খাবারটা হাসপাতালের কেনটিন থেকে কিনতে হয়েছে মোতাহারকে।
হাসপাতাল কর্তৃপক্ষ জানায়, মোতাহার প্যাদার ঘটনাটি একটু ভিন্ন। তিনি বিমার আওতায় পড়েন না, আবার দরিদ্রও বটে। তাই তাঁর খরচটা ভিন্ন ধরনের হয়েছে।
রাজধানীর সরকারি-বেসরকারিনির্বিশেষে সব হাসপাতালে রোগীর উপচে পড়া ভিড় দেখা গেলেও গণস্বাস্থ্য নগর হাসপাতালটির চেহারা কিছুটা ভিন্ন। সকাল-সন্ধ্যা এই হাসপতালে রোগীর চাপ নেই। অথচ এই হাসপাতালে মাত্র ৫০০ টাকায় রিশকাচালক, ভ্যানচালক, চা বিক্রেতা, ফেরিওয়ালা ও দিনমজুরের চোখের ছানি কেটে কৃত্রিম লেন্স পরিয়ে দেওয়া হয়।
এই হাসপাতালের উদ্যোক্তা জনস্বাস্থ্যবিদ জাফরউল্লাহ চৌধুরী প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, ‘আমার দুই চোখে দুটি কৃত্রিম লেন্স। গণস্বাস্থ্য নগর হাসপাতালের চিকিৎসকেরাই তা লাগিয়েছেন।’ চিকিৎসার ব্যয় দরিদ্র মানুষের সাধ্যের মধ্যে রাখা সম্ভব, সেটা প্রমাণ করতে দিশারি প্রকল্প হিসেবে তাঁরা হাসপাতালটি তৈরি করেছিলেন।
চক্ষু চিকিৎসক গৌর গোপাল সাহা বলেন, সেখানে দরিদ্র মানুষকে স্বাস্থ্যবিমার আওতায় চিকিৎসা দেওয়া হয়। চোখের সমস্যা নিয়ে কোনো নিম্নবিত্ত মানুষ এলে প্রথমে ১০০ টাকা দিয়ে (ধূমপায়ী হলে ১২৫ টাকা) বিমা করা হয়। এই বিমার আওতায় রোগী ও তাঁর পরিবার এক বছর বিনা মূল্যে চিকিৎসাসেবা পাবেন। বিমা করার পর রোগীর প্রয়োজনীয় সব পরীক্ষা করা হয় ৫০ টাকায়। চোখে অস্ত্রোপচার করে যে কৃত্রিম লেন্সটি লাগানো হয়, তার দাম ২৫০ টাকা। অস্ত্রপচারের পর এক দিন হাসপাতালে থাকতে হয় বলে আরও ১০০ টাকা নেওয়া হয়। সব মিলে ৫০০ টাকায় চোখের ছানি কেটে লেন্স লাগিয়ে দেওয়া হয়।
রিশকাচালক, ভ্যানচালক, চা বিক্রেতা, ফেরিওয়ালা ও দিনমজুর মিলে দুই হাজার ৩০০ নিম্নবিত্ত মানুষ এই হাসপাতালের বিমার আওতায় আছেন। এঁদের পরিবারের সদস্যরা বছরভর বিনা মূল্যে এই হাসপাতাল থেকে চিকিৎসাসেবা পান।
যাঁরা বিমার আওতায় নন, তাঁদের ক্ষেত্রে ব্যয় একটু বেশি। চোখের ছানি কেটে লেন্স বসাতে সব মিলে খরচ সাড়ে তিন হাজার টাকা।

Four TTSH doctors provide free eye treatment and surgery for villagers in Bangladesh

Four doctors from TTSH's Dept of Ophthalmology - Dr Nikolle Tan, Dr Rajesh Rajagopalan, Dr Rupesh Agrawal, Dr Don Pek & fellow colleagues from NHG International - embarked on a trip to Bangladesh from Dec 10-11, to provide free eye treatment and surgery for the villagers.

Eye-See-The-World, an annual event since 2008, was organised by the Singapore Airlines. Together with eye specialists from the Bangladesh Eye Hospital, the team rendered free cateract surgery to 194 villagers over the span of 2 days.

It was a fruitful expediation, where people of different cultures met to interact and render aid to each other. The villagers expressed delight and were excited to see our doctors. By the end of the trip, many villagers and children were following the doctors everywhere!
